Hi Kirsty, Loving your blog. I have made quite a few b day cakes over the years and I've got a great book by Joanna Farrow called New Childrens Party Cakes. If you cant find it let me or my sister ( bellaboo) know and I'll post it to you.

I'm sorry I can't help you with a book choice, but I hope you're able to find one that will help. My younger boy turned 6 last year, what a fun age.

Hi Kirsty, Happy Birthday to Poppy for Friday!

Roll on icing is easy to use, for my Christmas star cake I mixed a few drops of blue colouring to some ready to roll white icing, a few drops of pink to a separate batch of white roll on icing and so on. Dust surface and rolling pin lightly with sieved icing sugar. Then roll out the icing to about 3mm thick and using star (or circle) cutters to cut out the shapes. Using a small paint brush I painted water to the back of the cut out stars and placed them randomly on the iced cake. You can buy pre-coloured roll on icing from Blue Ribbon online( a great cake decorating store)they also do an array of small cutters, including circles in various sizes.
Icing can keep along time as long as it is sealed in an airtight container. Hope this helps! Have a sweet day and good luck!
